Achieving Transfer from Mathematics Learning

چکیده

The question of transfer is a special challenge in mathematics teaching because the wide range and fragmentation curricula have many cases fostered an instrumental understanding, which makes difficult for students. Although promoting relational learning has been huge step forward achieving transfer, understanding usually remains at technical level learning. Fostering critical thinking metacognition raises to psychological level, as students are encouraged analyse their own thinking. Despite this, our hypothesis that will only be achieved when helped reach personal dimension, being discover way approaching global reality lives beyond subject. Learning, instance, greatest common divisor should opportunity that, numbers can presented by prime factors, people recognised features interests. As such, looking not differ from discovering interests with friends. Integrating specific general make no longer unattainable. Personalising means how one impacts on (oneself, others, world), thus making natural.

A transfer advantage of learning diagrammatic representations of mathematics

This study examined learning and transfer of a simple mathematical concept when learning a symbolic sentential format versus learning a diagrammatic format. Undergraduate college students learned an instantiation of a cyclic group and were then given a test of a novel isomorphic group of the same order followed by a test of a novel non-isomorphic group of a higher order. The results were that b...

Abstraction in Mathematics and Mathematics Learning

ION IN MATHEMATICS What does it mean to say that mathematics is “abstract”? Mathematics is a self-contained system separated from the physical and social world:  Mathematics uses everyday words, but their meaning is defined precisely in relation to other mathematical terms and not by their everyday meaning. Even the syntax of mathematical argument is different from the syntax of everyday lang...

Mathematics: Moving from Humor to Creativity

This study aimed to examine the effects of integrating humor into math curriculum on mathematical creativity of sixth grade students in primary school. The current paper reports the results of the quantitative section of a larger study conducted through a mixed methods design. Mathematical creativity of students based on their performance was measured after the implementation of the researcher-...

Mathematics and learning disabilities.

Between 5% and 8% of school-age children have some form of memory or cognitive deficit that interferes with their ability to learn concepts or procedures in one or more mathematical domains. A review of the arithmetical competencies of these children is provided, along with discussion of underlying memory and cognitive deficits and potential neural correlates. The deficits are discussed in term...
